Inmate at Fayette County Detention Center tests positive for coronavirus
An inmate at the Fayette County Detention Center has tested positive for coronavirus.
The Lexington Division of Community Corrections announced the case Tuesday night, saying it was the first case of COVID-19 among inmates at the jail.
The man began showing symptoms and was tested Monday.
“He was immediately moved into medical isolation, and the other inmates in the unit where he had been housed were isolated,” the jail said in a news release.
The positive test result came back Tuesday.
The Division of Community Corrections said it is conducting additional testing and working with the health department to find ways to reduce the risk to other inmates, corrections officers and staff.
The virus has swept through a number of Kentucky jails and prisons, including the Federal Medical Center on Leestown Road, where seven inmates died and more than 300 were sickened.
Last month, the Scott County Detention Center said it would stop taking new inmates for two weeks because of multiple cases of coronavirus.
