Scott County jail halts intake of new inmates after confirmed cases of COVID-19

The Scott County Detention Center will stop taking new inmates for two weeks after multiple cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the facility.

Because of precautions being taken to limit the cases, the facility has no “safe space” for new inmates, Jailer Derran Broyles wrote on the jail’s Facebook page.

“Despite our tireless efforts over the last several months to keep COVID-19 out of our jail, in the last several days we have experienced multiple confirmed cases of it at SCDC,” Broyles wrote. “We knew all along that it was going to be nearly impossible to keep out.”

The jail has implemented new protocols to help handle the outbreak, including quarantining infected inmates and those exposed to the infected from other inmates, Broyles wrote.

The lockdown has been put in place to protect those newly arrested and the people who are already in the jail, Broyles wrote. Those arrested in Scott County during the lockdown will be taken to another nearby jail.

“Myself, and our staff will continue to work hard and take every precaution necessary to ensure the safety and well being of our inmates, our staff and you, our community,” Broyles wrote. “We appreciate your continued support and prayers.”
