Another record high: Lexington again reports more than 1,000 new COVID cases

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department announced 1,345 new COVID-19 cases Friday, once again breaking the record for most COVID-19 cases reported in one day.

The seven-day rolling average has reached at least 878 new cases a day, per the health department.

As of Monday, 152 Fayette County residents were hospitalized with COVID-19, 80 percent of which were unvaccinated, according to the health department. Twenty-four of those patients were in the intensive care unit, 10 of which required a ventilator.

Ninety-two percent of the patients in the intensive care unit and all the patients on a ventilator were unvaccinated, the health department said.

Lexington has reported 80,206 total COVID-19 cases, 3,690 hospitalizations and 503 deaths, according to health department data. The local health department has been dealing with a backlog of cases during an “overwhelming surge” of infections, so the number of cases is higher than what has been reported in recent days, the health department said on social media.

The health department is continuing to offer same-day vaccine appointments at the Public Health Clinic on Newtown Pike. Those interested in getting vaccinated can call 859-288-2483 to schedule an appointment.
