An 11-year-old boy died in an all-terrain vehicle accident in Knott County Wednesday, according to Kentucky State Police.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., KSP responded to a call reporting a fatal ATV accident on a surface mine road. The accident occurred off Sylvester Branch in Knott County, in the Emmalena community.

The preliminary investigation showed the 11-year-old boy was driving the ATV at a high speed and lost control, and the vehicle overturned multiple times. He was ejected from the ATV and sustained fatal injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the Knott County Coroner’s Office, KSP said in a post to Facebook.

The boy was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred. An autopsy has been scheduled, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
