Man accused in Transy machete attack pleads not guilty
The man accused of attacking students in a Transylvania University café with a machete in April was arraigned on his charges Friday afternoon.
Mitchell W. Adkins, 19, pleaded not guilty Friday in Fayette County Circuit Court to charges including first-degree and fourth-degree assault, resisting arrest, three counts of menacing and four counts of terroristic threatening. Adkins was indicted by a grand jury on June 5.
Adkins, who was released from jail on a $25,500 cash bond on May 1, will be back in front of Judge Kimberly Bunnell on Aug. 11 and has a pretrial conference scheduled for July 13.
Adkins is accused of walking into Transylvania’s Jazzman’s Café on the morning of April 28, asking students about their political affiliation and then attacking at least two women, a witness said the day of the attack. One woman was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital to be treated for her injuries.
