‘Empty the Shelters’ event finds homes for 107 Lexington pets
The Lexington Humane Society found homes for 107 animals during a recent hurricane relief event organized by the BISSELL Pet Foundation.
The “Empty the Shelters Hurricane Relief” event, which ran through Sept. 23, facilitated free adoptions at 15 shelters in seven states to make room for animals displaced by this season’s hurricanes, according to the pet foundation. Homes were found for 764 pets overall as a result of the multi-state event.
“We are proud of the results we had with the hurricane relief event,” said Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “We worked closely with our shelter partners to achieve this success and save so many lives.”
In Lexington, homes were found for 46 cats, 54 dogs and seven other animals, according to the pet foundation. The Kentucky Humane Society in Louisville also took part in the event and placed 184 pets in homes.
The program opened space at the Lexington Humane Society and they took in 24 dogs displaced by Hurricane Harvey on Monday.
