Lexington UPS employee dies after being injured in equipment accident

A UPS worker died after an equipment accident at the UPS Customer Center on Mercer Road, according to the Lexington Fire Department and Lexington Police Department.

The worker, identified by the Fayette County coroner’s office as Anthony “Andy” T. Schanding, 43, of Nicholas County, was performing equipment maintenance when the injury occurred about 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, according to police.

The exact cause of the injuries was not released. There were no other people injured.

Schanding was pronounced dead at 12:09 p.m., soon after he arrived in the emergency room at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, the coroner’s office said.

His cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy to be performed Wednesday in Frankfort.

Schanding was married for 21 years and had two children, according to his obituary.

“His love for his wife and children could not be measured,” the obituary said. “Andy enjoyed spending time with his family, farming, karaoke, throwing darts and working on small projects. Andy was very talented and his gifts were often called upon.”

Schanding had worked at UPS in Lexington for the past year, and before that had worked with Stamler/Joy Mining in Millersburg for 20 years, according to the obituary.

Clark Funeral Home in Carlisle is in charge of funeral arrangements. His visitation is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. and funeral will follow at 2 p.m., according to the obituary.

UPS’ facility on Blue Sky Parkway, a separate facility than Tuesday’s incident, has been involved in two serious accidents this year. In May, a propane torch set off an explosion at the facility. In August, a 50-year-old man died when a commercial lawnmower he was operating overturned and landed on top of him outside of the facility.
