These are the last days of this Lexington bridge. Removal crews busy.
Demolition started this week on the Jefferson Street bridge by the Lexington Convention Center and Rupp Arena.
The bridge is coming down to make way for a $241 million convention center expansion, and eventually, work on a proposed 10-acre Town Branch Park.
The portion of the bridge being removed from north of Manchester Street to Main Street spans the Cox Street parking lot. Jefferson Street will connect with Manchester Street from High Street.
The removal is expected to take five to six weeks, according to the city. Taking out an abutment on the High Street end is expected to take three to four weeks.
The alternate route for westbound traffic on both Main and High streets is the Oliver Lewis Way bridge. Eastbound traffic on Main Street should take Broadway.
