This key intersection on UK’s campus will be partially closed this weekend
A key intersection on the University of Kentucky’s campus will be partially closed starting Friday to relocate utilities, university officials said this week.
Eastbound traffic on Cooper Drive will be detoured to the south onto University Drive. Westbound traffic will detour to the north onto University.
North and southbound traffic on University will be able to cross Cooper and will not be affected.
The closure will start at 10:30 a.m. Friday and will continue until 6 a.m. Monday. Utility lines — electric, chilled water, steam, sewer and others — have to be moved to support future construction of new housing at the site of the Kirwan Blanding complex, which is scheduled to be razed later this year. University officials announced last year that a new housing complex will eventually be built there.
Winslow Street, between South Limestone and South Upper streets, has also been restricted to one lane as construction continues on the expansion of UK’s South Limestone parking garage.
Commuters should get used to closures on the short but well-traveled Winslow corridor. Lane restrictions on Winslow will likely continue for months after the city begins a major sewer line replacement in that area that is scheduled to begin later this month.
