1 arrest, few fires on Lexington’s State Street after UK’s win over LSU on Saturday
University of Kentucky students gathered in large groups on State Street in Lexington after UK’s 42-21 win over Louisiana State University.
But the crowd was smaller and there were fewer problems than on Oct. 2 when UK men’s football beat the University of Florida. After that game, Lexington Fire Department responded to a couch fire, a trash fire and several minor injuries. Several fire trucks were also hit by debris.
On Saturday, two smaller fires were started and quickly extinguished shortly around midnight. One person was arrested for disorderly conduct, according to city officials.
Students gathered in large groups and chanted: “We want Georgia.”
UK faces undefeated Georgia next week. This is the first time since 1950 that UK’s football program has been 6-0.
Lexington Police Department shut down State, Elizabeth, Crescent and University streets shortly before the UK game ended, said Susan Straub, a spokeswoman for the city.
Lexington police estimated at one point between 450 and 500 people were in the area. But shortly before 1 a.m. that number had dwindled to less than 100.
