Where Thursday’s snowstorm ranks all-time in Lexington’s history

Yesterday’s snowfall in Lexington ranked No. 7 all-time in the snowiest days in the city’s history, according to a press release from the city.

The National Weather Service said Lexington received 9.9 inches of snow, which also broke the previous Jan. 6 record set in 1910.

The snowstorm wreaked havoc on the city’s roadways, as virtually all the major roads in Lexington suffered closures at some point Thursday. I-75 was shut down for roughly three hours due to many collisions and slide-offs.

As of 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Lexington police said they had responded to 102 non-injury collisions and 18 injury collisions. None of the injury collisions were life-threatening.

Police have suspended reporting non-injury collisions due to the buildup of collisions across the city. People involved in a non-injury accident should swap insurance information and a vehicle description with the other driver, take pictures of the accident and report the collision at the this link.

People are still encouraged to stay off the roads unless necessary, as near sub-zero temperatures are creating slick spots on the roads. City crews worked overnight treating all rank one and approximately half of the rank two roads in accordance with the city’s snow plan.

The city has canceled garbage pickup for Friday and rescheduled it for next Wednesday. On Saturday waste management will service downtown, emergencies and any Thursday pick-ups that weren’t completed because of weather.

Fayette County Public Schools, the University of Kentucky, all non-emergency state offices and the Lexington Senior Center are closed Friday.
