Paving on Vine Street will begin Monday resulting in some lane closures of the busy downtown Lexington street, city officials said this week.

The right hand lane of East Vine Street will remain closed between Quality Street and Grand Boulevard through mid-June.

When construction is completed there will be new traffic patterns on East Vine Street.

East Vine Street will still be three lanes, with the far right lane ending at Old Vine Street. After passing Old Vine Street, a third lane is added on the left side of the road, heading outbound onto Midland Avenue.

The city’s traffic engineering department evaluated traffic patterns on that section of East Vine Street and found significant traffic backups in the right-hand lane.

The new design will balance traffic across all three lanes and should be safer by reducing lane shifts between Old Vine Street and East Main Street, city officials said.

The repaving is part of the construction of the Town Branch Commons trail, a 2 mile section of trail that connects the Town Branch trail to the Legacy Trail at Midland and Third streets. The trail goes along Vine Street. The trail has been under construction for more than two years and is nearly complete, city officials said.
