Moped driver dies after crash shuts down Lexington road
A moped driver died two weeks after a collision in Lexington, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.
Derald Johnson, 61, of Lexington, died Monday from complications of multiple blunt force injuries, according to the coroner’s office. Johnson suffered the injuries in a collision with a vehicle two weeks prior.
The crash happened on Aug. 12 in the area of North Broadway and North Broadway Park. Lexington police Lt. Jesse Palmer said it was a collision between a car and a moped.
Johnson was transported to a hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries, according to Palmer. No other injuries were reported.
No charges are expected to be filed at this time, according to Palmer. The Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash.
North Broadway was shut down between W. Loudon Avenue and 12th Street while CRU investigated the scene. Palmer said the road reopened around 11:50 a.m.
There have been 18 fatal collisions in Fayette County this year, according to Kentucky State Police data. At this point last year there were 33 fatal wrecks.
In 2023, 52 people died in fatal collisions in Fayette County, according to the Kentucky State Police. That is the highest number of deaths from crashes recorded in a single year in Fayette County since KSP began tracking deadly crashes in 2010.
The only other time Fayette County recorded 50 deaths from wrecks in a single year since 2010 was in 2016, when 50 people were killed in 48 collisions, according to state police data.
