Lexington recycling center to shut down Dec. 4. Here’s where customers can take recycling

The Lexington Recycle Center, which processes recycling for Lexington and 21 surrounding local governments, will close later this week for 10 days for needed repairs.

The closure will allow the Thompson Road facility to replace two key pieces of equipment - a baler, which compresses raw recyclables into blocks, and a covering for the center’s tipping floor. The covering keeps recycling dry before it is processed.

The center will be closed from Dec. 4-15.

The closure affects multiple cities and counties that send recycling to the center. Those communities are: Anderson County, Berea, Boyle County, Clark County, Danville, Frankfort, Franklin County, Georgetown, Harrison County, Harrodsburg, Jessamine County, Lawrenceburg, Madison County, Montgomery County, Nicholasville, Scott County, Shelby County, Shelbyville, Simpsonville, Versailles and Winchester.

Any recycling placed in recycling bins during the closure will be sent to the landfill, city officials have said.

But residents will have other options if they can’t hang on to recyclables until the center reopens.

Rumpke, a private trash disposal company, has two recycling drop-off sites open for Lexington Recycle Center customers.

The drop-off service is free.

Rumpke will take those recyclables to its Cincinnati processing center, Rumpke officials said Monday.

“We made a commitment to our customers that we would collect and recycle paper, cans, bottles, cardboard and glass, and we are taking extra steps to ensure recycling continues without interruption,” said Adam Rumpke, region vice president for Rumpke.

The two drop off locations in Central Kentucky:

  • Scott County Transfer Station
  • 245 W Yusen Dr.Georgetown, KY 40324
  • Hours: Monday-Friday: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. – Noon
  • Residents can drop off paper, plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum cans, steel cans and cardboard, during normal business hours.
  • Rumpke Recycling Central Kentucky
  • 847 Angliana Ave.Lexington, KY 40508
  • Hours: Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Residents can drop off paper, cardboard and aluminum cans during normal business hours. Material must be separated.

Materials should be placed in the recycling containers loose, Rumpke officials said. Do not put the recycling in plastic or other bags.

Customers with questions about what can be recycled can contact Rumpke at 1-800-828-8171.
