What’s opened and closed for Presidents Day in Lexington? See the list
While Lexington grocery stores, restaurants and shopping centers are typically open for Presidents Day, it’s not the day for running errands at the bank or post office.
This year, the holiday falls Monday, Feb. 16.
Here’s a quick rundown of what city services are open and closed during the federal holiday, along with two local museums that are holding special events for free.
What’s typically closed in Lexington on President’s Day?
Federal government agencies
Presidents Day, also designated by federal law as George Washington’s Birthday, is a holiday for federal employees. That means closures include most federal courts, along with banks and credit unions as the Federal Reserve also takes a banking holiday.
Additionally, while Presidents Day is not a holiday for state employees in Kentucky, Faytte County Public Schools will be closed.
The school district does not use Presidents Day as a make-up day for snow due to an employee contract, FCPS said on its Facebook account Thursday.
US Postal Service
The U.S. Postal Service doesn’t deliver mail on holidays, including Presidents Day, when post offices will also be closed.
If you need to ship a package Monday, make other plans. UPS pickup and delivery services are available, while FedEx operates on modified service for the holiday.
City offices and trash pickup services
Presidents Day is a holiday for Lexington-Fayette city employees.
There will also be no city waste collection Monday, according to the city’s website.
If your normal trash pickup day is Monday, expect that service Wednesday, Feb. 18, instead. Set your carts on the curb Tuesday evening in time for pickup the following morning. Businesses that receive dumpster pickup services Monday and Tuesday will also see one-day delays. Thursday and Friday service won’t be affected.
The Haley Pike Waste Management Facility, Lexington Recycle Center and the Electronics Recycle Center will be closed Monday, as well.
If you’ve experienced delays in trash pickup service since Winter Storm Fern, contact LexCall at 311.
Health department
The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department will be closed for the holiday.
