$70,000 is raised for foundation honoring Russell County woman slain while jogging

More than 3,400 runners raised at least $70,000 after expenses Saturday in honor of a Russell County woman who was killed during a morning jog in June, said Stephanie Foley, a race coordinator.

"It was amazing. Absolutely amazing," said the Rev. Wendell Roberts on Saturday. "What love was shown from the community."

Roberts is the father of Sarah Roberts Hart, a mother of three who was killed in Russell County on June 14. She was pregnant at the time of her death. Her alleged killer faces the death penalty.

Money raised in the Run With All Your Hart will go to the Sarah Roberts Hart Foundation and will provide scholarships to students pursuing careers in pharmacy and/or medicine.

About 2,800 people ran in Russell Springs alone, and an additional 600 runners raised money at other races in Murfreesboro, Tenn., A Midsummer Night's Run held Saturday night in downtown Lexington, and elsewhere. Those "virtual runners" were in all 50 states and six foreign countries, Foley said.

"We printed over 3,800 shirts, and we don't have any left," Roberts said. It's possible that the final amount raised might exceed $100,000, he said. "It will probably be next week before we have any idea about the final totals."
