City of Richmond declares state of emergency as rainfall causes flash flooding
The City of Richmond declared a state of emergency Saturday afternoon due to heavy rainfall and flash flooding from severe storms.
Mayor Robert Blythe stated in his proclamation that the state of emergency is necessary as ongoing weather conditions “present and immediate threat to the health, safety and well-being of the citizens of Richmond and require extraordinary measures to protect life and property.”
Richmond Fire has requested additional water rescue teams through a regional partnership with the Bluegrass Emergency Response Team, as water rescues continue to be conducted in the area by both the city and county response departments.
Hazardous conditions have flooded numerous roads, homes and businesses, according to WEKU. City officials are urging residents to avoid driving and to comply with evacuation and safety orders.
Madison County is under a flash flood warning issued by the National Weather Service until 5:15 p.m. Saturday.
Madison Home, a local shelter, is opening up as an emergency shelter for flood victims in the county. Located at 105 Fifth St. in Richmond, it will have food and other necessities available.
The Red Cross is setting up an emergency shelter at 425 Eastern Bypass for anyone who needs it as well, according to a Facebook post from First Baptist Church in Richmond.
