Updated: Roughly 25 horses, other animals die as Georgetown barn burns to the ground
Roughly 25 horses and other animals were killed as a result of a barn fire in Scott County early Sunday morning, according to the Scott County Fire Department.
Assistant Fire Chief Jim Kanavy said the fire department was dispatched to Brannon Stables on Ironworks Pike at 12:55 a.m. Sunday. The barn was completely burned down to the ground when firefighters arrived.
Roughly 25 horses, a couple of dogs, cats and a goat were lost in the fire, according to Kanavy. The fire department has not yet been able to determined the monetary value of what was lost, as the scene was still too hot when investigating Monday, according to Kanavy.
The cause of the fire is also still under investigation. Kanavy said there was lightning in the area at the time of the incident. Officials are working to determine if that’s what sparked the fire.
A passerby reported the blaze to the fire department, according to Kanavy.
“It was significantly involved before 911 was called,” Kanavy said.
With the barn burned down, the fire department’s main mission was to prevent the fire from spreading to other buildings on the property. Kanavy said some siding on the nearby house had melted from the fire
The fire department called the Lexington Fire Department and the Franklin County Fire Department requesting tankers to haul in extra water.
“We are grateful and humbled by the outpouring of love and support,” said Nancy Brannon, one of the owners of Brannon Stables, in a Facebook post. “At this point, we are focusing on putting one foot in front of the other. If I have missed responding to a call or message, please know that it is still deeply appreciated.”
Brannon Stables is an all service equine facility that concentrates on training, lessons, breeding and all aspects of the equine industry, according to its Facebook page.
“I made so many friends while there but it’s also where I met Fish,” Kayla Mack wrote in a Facebook post. “Fish was an amazing horse and was the horse I showed for my first year as an amateur. He made me into a better rider and gave me that true big show horse experience. He was the biggest love bug and always gave 110% in the ring.”
A GoFundMe campaign has been setup to raise funds for Brannon Stables. Nearly $80,000 had been raised as of 11 a.m. Tuesday, and the link’s goal is to raise $100,000.
