Police look for ‘person of interest’ in Red Mile shootings; court records reveal more details

Lexington police are looking for a person of interest in the drug-related robbery that ended with two people shot on Red Mile Road Thursday.

Three men, each armed with handguns, attempted the robbery, according to court records. One suspect has been arrested and charged and another is expected to be charged, police said.

Police were initially dispatched Thursday night to the Shell station at 930 South Broadway for a report of someone who had been shot, according to court documents. When officers arrived, they found Robert Record, 22, with a gunshot wound to the back.

Record told officers he had been in the area of the apartment at 975 Red Mile Road when he saw several men nearby, according to court documents. He told officers he’d tried to run when the men started shooting and he was struck in the back.

When officers went to Red Mile Road, they found a gun and shell casings outside, according to court documents. But the description of events changed. Officers were told by a witness that several masked men had entered the apartment at 975 Red Mile Road, fired multiple shots and then fled.

Officers then went to the apartment, where they found several bullet holes in the walls and spent shell casings inside, according to court documents.

In interviews with more victims and witnesses, officers learned that several victims were able to escape through the basement garage of the apartment when they saw the three men enter, according to court documents. But two victims were led back into the apartment at gunpoint.

One of the fleeing victims then re-entered the apartment and retrieved two guns, a .22 caliber revolver and a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, according to court documents. Once he had the guns, he ran into a bedroom.

While in the bedroom, the man said he saw the other two victims being led up the stairs at gunpoint, according to court documents. Once one of the victims passed him, the man stepped into the hallway and shot one of the suspects.

The suspect then fired back in the direction of the man from the bedroom, who shot the suspect multiple times, according to court documents.

The man from the bedroom then turned to fire at the other suspect and unintentionally struck Robert Record, according to court documents. At that point, everyone ran from the apartment.

Saquan Freeman, 19, was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital after being shot multiple times during the robbery. He is also expected to be charged in the case, according to police.

Demetrioun L. Boaz, 20, has been charged with first-degree robbery in the case.

Investigators determined the robbery occurred after a someone attempted to sell marijuana to Boaz outside the apartment. Boaz pulled a gun during the transaction and the person selling the marijuana ran into the apartment at 975 Red Mile Road before escaping through the basement garage, according to court documents.

Boaz is being held at the Fayette County jail.
