Updated: Name released of second man killed in 2 shootings on same Lexington block

Two homicides of men in their 50s occurred on the same block of Augusta Drive in 19 hours, Lexington police said Thursday.

Police initially said it was unclear if the two deaths were linked.

Police responded to the 1800 block of Augusta Drive for a shots-fired call with a victim hit at 1:40 a.m. Thursday, according to Lt. Chris Van Brackel. Police found the victim — later identified as Bruce Trice, 58, — outside with a gunshot wound, Van Brackel said. He was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, Van Brackel said.

He died at the hospital about 3 a.m., according to the Fayette County coroner. The coroner’s office released the man’s name after an autopsy.

The death was the 12th homicide in Lexington this year, two more than there were in the same period in 2019, which was a record year for homicides.

The shooting occurred in the same block as Wednesday’s homicide which killed Lowell Anthony Johnson, 55, according to the Fayette County coroner’s office.

Sgt. Donnell Gordon said later Thursday morning that police didn’t know if there was any connection between the two cases.

“Detectives are canvassing the area and asking anyone with information to contact police,” Gordon said.

Those with information can call Lexington police at (859) 258-3600. Anonymous tips can also be sent through Bluegrass Crime Stoppers at (859) 253-2020 or www.bluegrasscrimestoppers.com.

In addition to the two fatal shootings, there was also a shooting nearby on Augusta Court Wednesday afternoon in which no one was hurt, Van Brackel said. Unique Jameal Dashawn Edwards, 19, was detained for that shooting, Van Brackel said. He was charged with wanton endangerment and drug possession, according to the Fayette County jail website.

Gordon said Wednesday that the shooting involving Edwards was not related to the homicide Wednesday morning.
