Man wanted in connection with assault during ‘otherwise peaceful protest’ turns himself in
Lexington police have charged a third person in connection with an assault Monday that happened during an “otherwise peaceful protest.”
Dylan Dempster, 19, turned himself in to police and was charged with first-degree riot, third-degree criminal mischief and second-degree wanton endangerment, according to police. He is accused of “knowingly participating in a riot,” injuring someone who was not a participant and breaking the victim’s windshield with a skateboard.
Kaulbert Wilson, 19, was arrested and charged in the case on Monday. Wilson was charged with inciting a riot, fourth-degree assault, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, two counts of menacing second-degree disorderly conduct and fleeing and evading police.
A 15-year-old boy whose name was not released because of his age was also charged, police said. Although he was seen with Wilson, his charges were not related to the assault, police said.
Police said that the assault was the result of a group of “disruptive protesters” acting outside the peaceful protest. The group attacked a vehicle on Midland Avenue, pulling the driver and her husband out of the car and beating them, according to police. The driver had a swollen eye, her husband had a concussion and their three children were in the car at the time, police said.
Wilson was taken to jail and later bonded out by a group that organized other protests over the weekend, but not the protest during which the assault occurred.
Police said they are still working to identify other people who may have been involved in the assault. During their search for Dempster, they said three men assaulted the two victims.
Protests in Lexington started Friday and continued through at least Thursday, as groups gathered to call for an end to police violence and call for accountability within the Lexington Police Department.
