Arrest made in 2019 shooting death of Nicholasville mother outside Fayette Mall

A woman has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of a Nicholasville mother who was shot and killed while leaving the Fayette Mall in 2019.

Markeeta Campbell, 23, was arrested by Lexington police and the U.S. Marshals service Monday, according to Lexington police. She is accused of shooting and killing 30-year-old LaPorscha Stringer.

At about 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 23, 2019, Stringer was at a stoplight at a mall parking lot exit when a person in the vehicle in front of her turned around and re-entered the mall parking lot through an exit lane, witnesses told police. When the suspect was beside Stringer’s car, they fired multiple shots at her before fleeing, police said at the time.

Stringer died at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital a few days later.

Stringer had three children, and a friend who was on the phone with her when she was shot said that her first thought was of them.

“(The friend) heard the gunshots over the phone and LaPorscha’s first words after being shot in the head were, ‘Why?! What about my babies?!’” Stringer’s cousin Jenni Haynes told the Herald-Leader in 2019. “She loved her children very much and they ripped her away from them as well as everyone else that loved her.”

Campbell is being held in the Fayette County Detention Center.
