Charges filed against Lexington mother in child fentanyl overdose case
A Lexington mother has been charged in connection to a child fentanyl overdose case, according to court records.
Diamond Smith, 26, has been charged with second-degree criminal abuse — child 12 or under, according to court records. Her arrest warrant says she permitted her infant daughter to be abused and placed the infant in a situation that caused a serious physical injury.
The infant suffered a fentanyl overdose at Smith and Terry Alexander’s home address on Millstone Way. Court documents say the infant is currently on life support at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital and not expected to recover once/if a ventilator is removed.
Smith and Alexander are the infants parents, according to court documents.
Alexander, 30, was charged with second-degree criminal abuse — child 12 or under on July 29. Four days later his bond was lowered from $100,000 to $25,000 and he was released from the Fayette County Detention Center after posting the bond.
Alexander’s case has been sent to a grand jury, according to court records. Smith will be arraigned in Fayette District Court Friday and is being held at the Fayette County jail on a $50,000 bond.
