A woman charged with murder this month shot the victim in the back as he was walking away, according to a detective with the Lexington Police Department.

Keaira Pennie, 30, is charged with killing 42-year-old Edwin Haddix on Aug. 11.

At a preliminary hearing Wednesday morning, police gave new, but limited details about what led to Pennie’s arrest.

The shooting happened just before midnight in the 1700 block of Bryan Station Road. When officers arrived, they found Haddix with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the University of Kentucky hospital.

Two witnesses identified Pennie as the shooter, said detective Nicholas Music. The witnesses told police Pennie approached Haddix in a driveway and shot him as he was walking into a home.

Haddix’s autopsy confirmed he was shot four times in the back. Six shell casings were found at the scene, and they matched a gun that belonged to Pennie.

Music testified a dispute led up to the shooting and discussed an “intimate relationship.” Pennie has no criminal history, according to court documents.

Fayette District Judge Bruce Bell found probable cause to send Pennie’s case to the grand jury, who will determine if criminal charges will be pursued.

Pennie’s bond remains at $150,000.
