A Kentucky man charged with murder claims the man he shot and killed had tortured him for years with “direct-energy weapons,” according to TV station WKYT.

James Gleason, 40, is accused of shooting Adam Roark, 39, multiple times Oct. 8 at a home on Dogwood Lane in Somerset, according to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office. Roark was pronounced dead at the scene, and Gleason was arrested outside his home.

Gleason called 911 to report the shooting, WKYT reported Wednesday. Detective Ryan Jones with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office testified that Gleason did not elaborate on what the direct energy weapons were, according to WKYT. Jones said Gleason emptied the magazine of the gun.

Gleason is charged with murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. Court records indicate Gleason’s case was sent to the grand jury.

Gleason’s attorney told WKYT he wants his client to undergo a mental evaluation.

Gleason’s bond remains at $1 million, according to court records.
