Man charged with October hit-and-run crash that killed cyclist in Lexington
A man has been charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist last month in Lexington.
Jacob Holland, 23, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death or serious physical injury and tampering with physical evidence. He is being held at the Fayette County Detention center, said Sgt. Bige Towery, of the Lexington Police Department.
The crash happened just after 11 p.m. Oct. 25 on Georgetown and Price roads. Jose Luis Hernandez Sosa, 59, of Lexington, was cycling at the time when he was hit by a car that left the scene.
Sosa was pronounced dead at the scene just before midnight.
Holland was later found and arrested at a home in Wilmore on unrelated warrants. Court documents say the vehicle believed to have been involved in the collision — a Jeep Compass — was also found at the home.
A woman whose name was on the Compass’ registration was at the home and told detectives Holland was out at the time of the collision but returned home about an hour after it happened, according to court documents. Holland told the woman he hit a curb and parked the vehicle in the garage instead of the driveway, which is where he usually parked it.
Detectives obtained a warrant to seize the vehicle. Court documents say the car had a small crack on the bumper and a broken wheel well trim piece that had been screwed back in with drywall screws.
Detectives believe the vehicle had been recently washed, specifically the front passenger wheel well, according to court documents. However, other parts of the car still had dirt streaks, bug remains and brake dust on it, leading detectives to believe Holland washed the car to remove evidence from the collision.
Detectives also found possible hair, clothing fibers and biological matter were underneath the vehicle and sent to a lab for testing, according to court documents.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit assisted with the investigation, and used witness statements, a tip given to Bluegrass Crime Stoppers, along with traffic and FLOCK cameras in the investigation, Towery said.
Holland is scheduled to be arraigned in Fayette District Court on Tuesday. He is being held on a $25,000 bond, according to court records.

Holland has been convicted of several traffic violations previously, including speeding, failure to wear a seat belt and driving on a suspended or revoked license, according to court records. In 2024, Holland pleaded guilty to fleeing or evading police and speeding 26 mph or greater after he was caught passing vehicles around 100 mph on a motorcycle on U.S. 27 in Nicholasville.
Holland sentenced to two years of probation and fined $60 for pleading guilty, according to court records.
