A former Kentucky assistant principal was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday for grooming a student, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Kentucky.

Aaron Anderson, 52, was the assistant principal at McCreary County High School and began messaging a minor at the school on Microsoft Teams in August 2023. Court documents say Anderson messaged the student daily and exchanged thousands of messages through February 2024.

The attorney’s office said Anderson coerced and enticed the student, using phrases such as “I love you” and “XOXO,” bought gifts, gave money and frequently praised the student, according to court documents.

“The grooming messages were part of the enticement as they were intended to flatter her, build intimacy and create a sense of obligation,” the attorney’s office said in a news release.

In February 2024, Anderson engaged in sexual contact with the student while they were alone in his office, according to court documents. Several months later, in October 2024, Anderson was indicted on one count of coercion and enticement of a minor online.

Anderson pleaded guilty to the charge in August in exchange for a 10-year prison sentence, the shortest possible sentence for a guilty conviction on the charge. He could have faced life in prison.

The attorney’s office said Anderson must serve 85% of his sentence and will be on probation for 10 years after his release. He will also be required to register as a sex offender upon release.

Court documents say the student is not seeking restitution.
