EKY middle school teacher sentenced to 11 years for enticing a former student
A former Magoffin County middle school teacher was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to enticement of a minor.
Jordan Cobb, 32, of Salyersville, pleaded guilty in October to engaging in an inappropriate Snapchat conversation with a former student. He sent a series of sexually explicit messages, offered to provide the minor with marijuana and made plans to meet for sex, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky.
Under federal law, Cobb must serve a little more than nine years of his sentence and will be subject to 10 years probation after his release.
Cobb and another former Magoffin County teacher, Jason Back, 43, of Salyersville, were separately indicted by a Magoffin County grand jury in March. Kentucky State Police were alerted by the school district that both teachers had engaged in inappropriate conduct with students.
Back faces two counts of third-degree rape, one count of third-degree sodomy and two counts of procuring or promoting the use of a minor by electronic means. He had sex with a 17-year-old student, according to the indictment. The age of consent in Kentucky is generally 16, but because he came into contact with the minor through a position of authority, that conduct is rape under state law.
He pleaded guilty to online enticement of a minor in federal court Jan. 12 and is scheduled for sentencing in May.
Federal charges were added against Back and Cobb in May. Cobb was initially charged with online enticement and cyberstalking. The cyberstalking charge was dropped per his plea agreement, according to court records.
Neither of the two former teachers are still employed by Magoffin County Schools, according to the local newspaper, the Salyersville Independent.
