Olive Hill man dies in crash after fleeing Kentucky State Police traffic stop
An Olive Hill man died Saturday after he lost control of his car during a pursuit with Kentucky State Police.
Donavan Kyle Porter, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene after his car struck a utility pole and was engulfed in flames, according to state police.
The incident started around 8:45 p.m. March 21, when a trooper spotted Porter, who was driving a gray Chevrolet Camaro, speeding in Bath County and attempted to make a traffic stop. Porter accelerated and failed to stop, and the trooper gave chase, state police said.
Porter exited Interstate 64 at exit 133, turning onto KY 801, according to police. The trooper lost sight of Porter’s car and the pursuit ended about five minutes later, but residents reported seeing the Camaro driving south on KY 801.
A trooper saw the Camaro around 9 p.m. and attempted a second stop, but Porter fled and a second pursuit began, KSP said.
Porter lost control of the vehicle around KY 801 and KY 519. His car went off the road, hit a utility pole and caught fire.
“Troopers made every effort to remove the driver from the vehicle but were unsuccessful,” KSP said in a Sunday news release.
The release did not identify the troopers involved.
Porter was pronounced dead at the scene by the Rowan County coroner’s office and taken to Frankfort for an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing by the Kentucky State Police Critical Response Team.
