Fayette County grand jury to hear evidence against man charged in February slaying

A Fayette County grand jury will hear evidence against a man charged in a February slaying.

The case against Jayronn Montero Nickerson was waived to the grand jury Tuesday during a preliminary hearing in connection with the shooting death of 23-year-old Vincenzo Happy in February.

Happy was fatally shot inside a car on the afternoon of Feb. 9 in a shopping center on Lima Drive. He was pronounced dead just before 2:30 p.m. at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.

Lexington police said as many as a dozen shots had been fired near several businesses at the shopping center. Several shots pierced Happy's black Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Nickerson, 22, was identified by a witness as the only person who was shooting at the car, according to court documents. He has since been charged with murder and violating his parole. Nickerson was being held in Fayette County Detention Center.
