Lexington plans to build new school for all-girls science, tech, math academy.
A newly constructed building is planned in Lexington for an all-female science, technology, engineering and math academy for kindergarten through eighth grade, officials said Monday night.
Fayette County Public Schools Chief Operating Officer Myron Thompson said the Girl’s STEM school would initially open this fall in the building that once housed Linlee elementary school on Spurr Road.
Thompson said the newly constructed girl’s STEM academy could open in 2023. A location has not been determined.
School district officials are also looking for a site where the existing Southside and Eastside career and technical centers could be combined into a new technical center.
If the Kentucky Department of Education gives approval for a local planning committee to assemble in March, the district’s facility plan will be changed to add the projects.
Meanwhile, Thompson said he is still looking for land for a new middle school for Fayette County.
