KSP investigated sodomy, seized brooms in KY football high school hazing inquiry
Kentucky State Police opened a sodomy investigation and seized brooms in response to hazing allegations involving McCreary County Central football players at an August football camp in Casey County, a KSP record shows.
State police officials sent the records to the Herald-Leader Friday in response to the newspaper’s Kentucky Open Record request.
KSP officials previously confirmed to the Herald-Leader they are investigating allegations of hazing between football players that were received Aug. 28.
The documents the Herald-Leader received Friday shows that on Aug. 28, John Blevins, an attorney for McCreary County Schools, contacted KSP. Blevins told them that on Aug. 1-2, the football team conducted a football camp in Casey County.
The camp is on KY Highway 70, according to the KSP record.
Blevins asked that he be contacted regarding several hazing incidents that occurred at the camp between football players.
On Aug. 29, a case was opened “for Sodomy 1st,” the KSP record shows.
A notation in the record on the same day says “seized brooms.”
The record shows that KSP investigators have been in McCreary County several times, including on Sept. 16 when the record says “interviews conducted.”
Blevins and KSP officials did not immediately comment Friday afternoon.
On Sept. 12, Casey County Attorney Thomas Weddle Jr. told the Herald-Leader that he and Casey County Commonwealth’s Attorney Brian Wright are “waiting on the investigation from Kentucky State Police. We are aware of allegations. We do not have the investigation or any facts sufficient that I can disclose to you at this time.”
Earlier in September, Kentucky High School Athletic Association Commissioner Julian Tackett told the Herald-Leader there had been no confirmation of a KHSAA rule violation, so the association had no authority in the case.
