Two Central Kentucky school buses crashed in separate incidents Monday, and one wreck resulted in six children being sent to the hospital.
One of the wrecks happened in Fayette County and the other in Madison County.
The Madison County school bus crash happened around 7:23 a.m. Dec. 8 on Caleast Road. Deputy Michael Stotts with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said there were 24 students on board at the time, and six were taken to a hospital
The bus was headed south when it sideswiped another vehicle and continued forward before it collided head-on with an SUV.
Six students were taken to a hospital to be checked for minor injuries — five by an ambulance and one by a parent, according to Madison County Schools community education director Erin Stewart.
The uninjured children, middle and high school students, were put on another bus and taken to school.
Both occupants of the SUV also suffered minor injuries and went to a hospital, according to Stotts.
The road reopened around 9 a.m., and officials do not expect to file charges in the crash.
No injuries in FCPS bus crash
Tracy Bruno, a spokesperson for Fayette County Public Schools, said the Lexington bus wreck happened on New Circle Road and no students were on board at the time.
The bus was returning to the garage when another vehicle crowded it, forcing the driver to move toward the shoulder of the road, Bruno said. The bus ultimately went off the road and into a ditch.
The adults on board were not hurt, according to Bruno. There were no other wrecks involving FCPS school buses Monday morning.
Fayette and Madison county schools had in-person learning on Monday despite the area receiving around 1 inch of snow during the morning commute. Several other Central Kentucky school districts, such as Bourbon, Franklin, Harrison, Jessamine and Scott counties, were all closed.
The Madison County crash was not weather-related, Stewart said.
“We are very grateful there were no serious injuries. We are also grateful to the emergency responders who assisted us this morning,” Stewart wrote in an email to the Herald-Leader.
