To ensure safe road conditions for bus routes Fayette County Public Schools is canceling in-person classes on Monday Feb. 9, for the 11th school day.

It will be a traditional snow day.

However, after-school activities will proceed.

On Tuesday, Feb. 10, students in kindergarten through 12th grade will return to school on a two-hour delay. Tuesday’s preschool sessions are canceled.

Some school bus routes in Lexington remain ice and snow covered. District officials surveyed the routes Sunday.

District officials want to make April 13, 2026, the Monday after spring break, which is currently on the district calendar as a day off for students, an instructional day for students and staff, according to the agenda for Monday Feb. 9 board meeting.

The Board of Education will take formal action to approve the amended calendar at the end of the instructional year, an agenda document said.

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton said Friday that even though the city took several steps and invested in improving its response this year, including new equipment and hiring additional contractors, officials were still not prepared to handle the thick coating of ice Lexington received, especially when it was coupled with extended cold.

Gorton and other local officials have said they will overhaul the city’s winter response plan after ice still is covering local streets throughout Lexington.

Gov. Andy Beshear has said the state was ready to help the city as it builds a new plan.

In all, FCPS officials have canceled 11 in-person school days in the aftermath of Winter Storm Fern on Jan. 24 and 25. FCPS used four consecutive nontraditional instruction days, from Jan. 26-29, before having five straight traditional snow days Feb. 2-6 and Feb. 9.

Aside from April 13, only March 20 has been confirmed as a make-up day for students.
