After snowstorm, Fayette superintendent says last day of school could be in June

With four days of school to make up from winter weather, Fayette County Superintendent Demetrus Liggins said the last day of school could be June 3, meaning the school year would be extended by almost one week.

Currently, the last day of school for Fayette County Public Schools is scheduled for May 28.

The Fayette County Board of Education won’t vote on the matter until after all possible winter weather has occurred, possibly in April.

The district has canceled 10 in-person days due to winter weather so far in the 2025-26 school year, much of which was caused by Winter Storm Fern. Lexington was hit with heavy snow and ice from the storm at the end of January, and the district went at least 10 days without in-person classes. But as of March 9, the district only has to make up four days, Liggins said Monday.

FCPS used a mix of traditional snow days and nontraditional instruction days to keep classes in session remotely.

FCPS has confirmed that March 20 and April 13 have been designated as makeup days to mitigate the additions at the end of the school year.
