Watch Dallas mom channel Aretha Franklin to win battle round on ‘The Voice’
With echoes of Tina Turner in her sound, Dallas mother Brittany Bree performed a song from another iconic diva to advance on “The Voice.”
Bree, who in her blind audition said she works two jobs to support her two daughters, sang alongside Samara Brown during Tuesday’s battle round. Their challenge was a daunting one — performing Aretha Franklin’s “Something He Can Feel.”
They got the coaches out of their seats as they belted the soulful anthem Tuesday. Bree previously saw all four coaches turn their chairs for her in the blind auditions and continued to get rave reviews during the second round.
Kelly Clarkson told the singers their voices are “insane” and gave Bree another exemplary compliment.
“Your voice, it kind of reminds me of how Tina (Turner) has kind of rock ‘n’ roll soul, but then Andrew Day...it has a little bit of that too,” Clarkson said. “I loved every minute you had your mouth open.”
Blake Shelton said Bree and Brown “owned the moment and the stage,” while Ariana Grande admitted she has been “obsessed” with the two since the blind auditions.
Both singers are part of John Legend’s team on “The Voice,” leaving him with the difficult decision to determine who advanced to the next round of competition.
Legend told Bree the “stank” in her voice hit him right in the heart.
“For you to have never sung secular music prior to coming to ‘The Voice,’ for you to deliver it with the passion, with the personality, with the charisma that you did, you did exactly what you were supposed to do,” Legend said.
Legend chose Bree as the winner of the round, moving the Dallas singer to the knockout rounds, which premiere later this month.
But Brown, who also got glowing reviews, did not see her time on the show come to an end. Legend opted to use his only save of the round on Brown and two other coaches attempted to steal her away. Brown, from New York, ultimately chose to remain on Legend’s team.
In the blind auditions earlier this season, Bree was one of seven singers to see all four coaches turn their chair. She is among four singers from Texas who advanced to the battle round, three of whom were on Legend’s team.
