Trooper helps woman deliver her baby along Tennessee highway. ‘Once in a lifetime’
A state trooper helped deliver a “once in a lifetime baby” along a highway in Tennessee.
Aaron Ranker responded to a call on Dec. 7 of a woman in labor along Interstate 40 near Dickson, Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Nashville District posted on Twitter.
Ranker used his expertise as a former emergency medical technician to help deliver the baby boy before paramedics arrived, according to the state highway patrol.
“My biggest thing was trying to calm everyone down,” Ranker told WREG. “Even the other officers there and everyone was a little deer in the headlights. That’s something that happens maybe once in a lifetime.”
Mother Sharie Madrid and her baby were taken to a local hospital in healthy condition, according to WTVF.
“It happened so fast,” Madrid told the outlet. “Couldn’t have asked for a better trooper to come be there for me. I would have not been able to do it without him.”
Ranker told WSMV he had a feeling his “medical background would help on some calls, but as far as delivering a baby on the side of the interstate, never in a million years.”
Dickson is about 42 miles west of Nashville.
McClatchy News reached out to Tennessee Highway Patrol on Dec. 9 and is awaiting response.
