The 47-year-old faces charges including driving under the influence in the deaths of two California brothers who were in Utah for a bicycle race, police said.

A 47-year-old woman accused of fatally hitting two bicyclists with her vehicle told Washington City officers she swerved when she began “uncontrollably” defecating, Utah police said.

The two California men died after the crash at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, police said in a news release. The brothers were competing in a bicycle race. Police did not release their names.

They were hit by a Hyundai Genesis while riding westbound in the bicycle lane on Telegraph Street, the release said. The men were taken to a hospital but pronounced dead.

In an affidavit, police said the woman driving the Hyundai Genesis told them she was on medication for a number of illnesses, including irritable bowel syndrome, and began to “uncontrollably defecate on herself” while driving, KUTV reported.

The affidavit said she swerved into the bicycle lane, striking the two men, but continued driving because she “could not get her vehicle to stop,” the Gephardt Daily reported. The engine died a few hundred yards away.

The woman told police she had been admitted to a hospital the previous day and put on fentanyl, KUTV reported.

She was arrested on suspicion of homicide involving criminal negligence with an automobile, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a deadly accident, reckless driving and improper lane travel, the Gephardt Daily reported.

Washington City, population 30,000, is near St. George in the southwestern corner of Utah.

Police ask that anyone with information on the incident call 435-986-1515.
