A 15-year-old was killed and a 16-year-old was critically injured when a vehicle ran them over during a fishing trip, according to Georgia State Patrol.

The crash happened around 7:45 p.m Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Paradise Public Fishing Area in Berrien County, troopers said.

The teens were riding “on the exterior” of the vehicle when they fell off and were struck, according to a news release. Both were taken to a hospital, where the 15-year-old later died.

Troopers didn’t release the boys’ names, but relatives identified the teenager who died as Michael Huffman.

“When I got the call, and that’s the most heartbreaking call you could ever get,” Michael’s aunt, Joye Griffin, told WALB. “I’ve always been there for that baby. I looked at him as being mine. The whole family looked at him as that’s their kid too.”

Griffin said her nephew was outgoing and enjoyed spending time outdoors, according to the station.

The condition of the 16-year-old wasn’t known as of Feb. 2.

Additional details about the crash weren’t immediately available, and troopers said the investigation is ongoing.

Berrien County is about 200 miles southeast of Atlanta.
