Two young children were killed in a dirt bike crash that left their father seriously injured, Florida officials said.

The 34-year-old dad was riding with his kids when a pickup truck hit their dirt bike on Feb. 24, according to an initial investigation from the Sanford Police Department.

The crash sent all three to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries. The children — ages 2 and 5 — later died, police said.

“Criminal charges are pending regarding the dirt bike that was not street-legal, had no headlight, and was reported to be traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash,” officers wrote in a news release, adding that the father and kids weren’t wearing helmets.

The crash was reported at about 7:30 p.m. along Historic Goldsboro Boulevard in Sanford, roughly 25 miles northeast of Orlando. The dirt bike had been traveling west on the road as the pickup truck tried to make a left turn, officials said.

“Tragic and completely avoidable doesn’t begin to describe the loss of these two young lives,” Police Chief Cecil Smith said in the release.

Police ask anyone with information about the case to contact them, call the Crimeline at 800-423-8477 or share tips at crimeline.org.
