A 29-year-old woman crossing a road with a child was killed when two cars hit her in Florida, officials said.

State troopers said the pedestrians were trying to get to the other side of an Orlando street when they “walked into the path” of an Infiniti. The car hit the woman and boy, who were both “down in the roadway” when a second car hit the woman, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver of the second car is accused of leaving the scene of the crash just before 9 p.m. on Feb. 25. It happened along State Road 50, also called West Colonial Drive, officials wrote in a news release.

The woman, an Orlando resident, was pronounced dead at a hospital. The boy also was taken to a hospital, where he was in intensive care with critical injuries, according to troopers.

The two are believed to be a mother and her son, highway patrol told McClatchy News in an email.

An investigation continues into the crash, which was reported in the eastbound lanes of State Road 50, near Powers Drive. The woman and child weren’t in a crosswalk at the time, officials said.

Troopers in their news release describe the car involved in the hit-and-run as a dark-colored sedan last seen traveling east.
