Shelter wanted ‘sweet’ dog sisters to be adopted together. Couple didn’t ‘think twice’
A couple came to a shelter wanting to get one puppy — then met a pair of “sweet” dog sisters.
“Sonia Ferreras fell in love when she met them,” the Mississippi Animal Rescue League wrote Aug. 14 on Facebook. “She and Ramon Tejada did not have to think twice about adopting both puppies.”
The shelter shared the heartwarming news after it said the Australian shepherds needed to stay together. Prissy, who has a birth defect that limits her eyesight, relies on her sister Piper to move around.
“These Aussie puppies are so bonded,” the Jackson-based animal organization wrote. “Sadly, the white puppy has vision problems and depends on her sister. She can see shadows but does not have clear vision.”
In addition to following Piper around in a cage, Prissy was seen snuggling up with her sister at bedtime. The two were known for being “sweet,” playful dogs with a love for attention, Debra Boswell, a shelter spokesperson, told McClatchy News in a phone interview.
The litter mates arrived at the shelter in mid July after someone surrendered them. The shelter required that the sisters be adopted into the same home due to their close relationship.
“A lot of people had wanted to adopt one or the other,” Boswell said, adding that some prospective owners weren’t ready to take home two puppies or felt they couldn’t care for a dog who had vision impairment.
Then, Prissy and Piper’s story caught the attention of Ferreras, who was visiting the shelter. She and her partner couldn’t imagine separating the two and adopted them together.
Now, the 10- to 11-week-old pups live in a home that has a fenced-in yard, Boswell said. While the update left shelter workers “ecstatic,” the dog’s new owner had more good news about Prissy and her sister.
“She says they’re really doing great,” Boswell said. “And at home, she’s staying right by her sister. That’s her eyes. That’s her safety zone.”
