Tourist from Oregon gets sick on manta ray snorkel trip and dies, Hawaii cops say
An Oregon woman visiting Hawaii became ill while taking part in a snorkeling trip and died a short time later, police said.
Lori Trende-Landgraver, 62, from Portland, was on a guided manta ray snorkeling trip April 30 in Kona on the island of Hawaii when she became sick, the Hawai‘i Police Department said in a May 1 news release.
Trende-Landgraver was in the water for about five minutes during the evening trip, and then she headed back to the boat saying her arms were sore, police said.
When she got back on board, she told the captain she felt ill and then soon “became unresponsive,” according to police.
The crew started CPR, and the boat went back to harbor, police said.
Trende-Landgraver was taken to a hospital, where she later was pronounced dead, according to police.
A coroner’s inquest investigation was started to determine what caused Trende-Landgraver’s death, police said, adding they don’t believe foul play was involved.
