Street sweeper runs over, kills construction worker, California police say

A construction worker died after being pinned beneath a street sweeper, California police and news sources reported.

Santa Fe Springs Fire and Rescue firefighters responded to the incident in a shopping center parking lot just after 8:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, KABC reported.

A worker found trapped under a street sweeper was pronounced dead at the scene, KCAL reported.

The accident took place during a private repaving project, The Daily Bulletin reported.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this tragic incident,” the city said in a statement to KCAL. “Our thoughts are with them during this very difficult time.”

Whittier police are investigating the worker’s death.

Santa Fe Springs is about a 15-mile drive southeast from downtown Los Angeles.
