Here are the latest results for Kentucky state House of Representatives, Senate races
Republicans are looking to grow their supermajorities in both chambers of the Kentucky Legislature, while Democrats are hoping to hold on to the seats they do have — and maybe steal a few seats from Republicans in the process.
This year’s general election was the first since GOP lawmakers had full control over redrawing statehouse district maps, changing the makeup of districts around the state. The Kentucky Democratic Party has sued over the redrawn state House map, alleging that “extreme partisan gerrymandering” violated the Kentucky Constitution.
The GOP went in to Election Day with solid 75-25 and 30-8 majorities in the House and Senate, respectively, allowing for easy overrides of any vetoes by Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear.
Some races at the margins of those majorities have drawn serious interest. Rep. Patti Minter, D-Bowling Green, joins Eastern Kentucky Democrats Ashley Tackett Laferty and Angie Hatton in a battle to see if Democrats can still win outside of the “Golden Triangle” region. In Central Kentucky, incumbents like Rep. Cherlynn Stevenson, D-Lexington, and Rep. Dan Fister, R-Versailles, are facing off in new districts against serious competition.
The size of the GOP majority still matters. Some Republican priority bills — such as the one that funded public charter schools in the state and shifted more control of library boards to county elected officials — could not have passed if the GOP majority in Frankfort were slimmer.
