Though the hotly contested Republican race for governor has dominated headlines of Kentucky’s 2023 primaries, several other statewide races will appear on the Tuesday, May 16 ballot.
If you aren’t familiar with the races, want to learn more about the candidates or simply need to catch up on the latest coverage of the gubernatorial primary races, we’ve rounded up some resources below.
Kentucky has closed primary elections, meaning you must have registered with the party by Dec. 31 of the prior year to participate in that party’s primary.
Polls will be open statewide May 16 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time.
Where can I find sample ballots for Kentucky’s 2023 primary elections?
Voters across the commonwealth can find sample ballots for all counties on the Kentucky secretary of state’s website at web.sos.ky.gov/electionballots/. There, sample ballot are sorted by county. Note your Election Day ballot will only include races you are eligible to vote in by party.
Many counties also offer a sample ballot lookup on their websites. Fayette County voters can use the county clerk’s search tool at fayettecountyclerk.com/web/elections/verifyvoter.htm to find theirs.
If you live in another county, you can visit kentuckycountyclerks.com/ to see if your clerk’s office offers sample ballots.

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan organization that focuses on participation and access to democratic elections, offers its Vote 411 project each election cycle.
At vote411.org, you can look up your ballot by your home address and see candidate-submitted information. For the May primary, Vote 411 has limited candidate profile offerings based on candidate responses.
Another nonpartisan voter organization, BallotReady, also has some limited information available about candidates in the primary. You can visit ballotready.org/ky to view it all.
