Winter weather is coming to Kentucky. How to be prepared for it on the roads.

Winter weather is projected to blanket large parts of Kentucky on Thursday, and Kentucky State Police along with Gov. Andy Beshear urged motorists to be prepared to drive in hazardous conditions.

KSP has asked drivers to be aware of the changing weather conditions heading into the weekend. They also provided a list of items motorists should store in their vehicles in case of an emergency.

The list features items like a cell phone charger, batteries, jumper cables, blankets and more.

“I encourage Kentuckians to avoid any unnecessary travel when road and weather conditions are dangerous,” said Captain Paul Blanton, Public Affairs Commander for KSP. “If travel is necessary, I urge you to review road conditions before you leave, clear your windows and mirrors and be patient.”

KSP is also asking citizens to avoid dialing 911 to obtain road and weather conditions. Instead, KSP will use Facebook, Twitter and their website to share winter weather updates.

“Our radio rooms experience a high number of calls from citizens inquiring about road conditions. It’s important we leave the lines open for individuals who are experiencing real emergencies,” Blanton said.
