Lucky Kentucky Powerball player becomes fourth US winner of Double Play grand prize

An anonymous Kentucky Powerball player has come forward with a winning ticket worth $10 million from the game’s June 24 drawing.

“I sat there for about 10 minutes looking at the numbers and looking at my ticket and it was right,” the winner told Kentucky Lottery officials, according to a Thursday news release from the agency.

After taxes, the player took home a check for a cool $7.2 million. The individual bought the winning ticket from a Circle K in Crestwood.

The player’s large payout is thanks to their decision to add-on the Powerball’s Double Play feature. For an additional dollar per play, players have the opportunity to play the same set of numbers again in a second drawing.

According to the Powerball’s website, Double Play drawings are held after every Powerball drawing, which occur Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Players can watch Powerball drawings via the game’s YouTube account.

The drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

According to the Kentucky Lottery, since 2021, there have only been four winners nationwide who have won the Powerball Double Play’s top prize of $10 million. According to Powerball’s website, the odds of winning that amount of money with a Double Play are 1 in 292,201,338.

Kentucky Lottery President and CEO Mary Harville commented on the rarity of the win in the news release.

“We are so excited about this $10 million win, both for our player and for longtime retailer Crestwood Circle K,” Harville said. “We began offering this game add-on feature in November, and fortunately, it didn’t take long for one of our players to make history by hitting the Powerball Double Play top prize. This winning experience sends a great message to our players: you can win a life-changing $10 million top prize with Double Play!”

The anonymous player came forward to claim their winnings last week after taking time to seek out financial and legal advice.

“I was overwhelmed and excited. Now I can retire!,” the anonymous player told Kentucky Lottery officials.

According to the lottery’s release, the winning ticket matched the five white balls and the red Powerball in the drawing for Double Play to win the $10 million top prize.

The winning numbers were 1, 31, 33, 54, 60 and Powerball 26.

Because the winning ticket was sold at the Crestwood Circle K, the store received a $100,000 selling bonus.

Though not to the degree of this latest win, other Kentucky Powerball players have managed to multiply their winnings and cash in large sums of money recently. In July, a Louisville man tripled his winnings for a $150,000 prize.
