Kentucky Lottery announces a pair of big winners who purchased tickets in the same county

If you’ve been meaning to buy a lottery ticket, Northern Kentucky wouldn’t be a bad place to do it.

Residents there have gotten quite lucky in recent months. That includes just last month when two winners in the area cashed in big prizes, the Kentucky Lottery announced Friday.

The two Campbell County winners, an anonymous man and woman, are in Dayton. They both told the Kentucky Lottery they plan to pay off debt, make some big purchases and support their families with their winnings, the agency said in a news release.

A near miss on the Powerball jackpot

According to the Kentucky Lottery, the first of the two winners bought a Powerball ticket for the game’s Sept. 9 drawing, managing to match four white ball numbers and the red Powerball.

That combination meant he won the game’s second-place, $50,000 prize, but came up just one number short of snagging the jackpot, at the time $121 million.

This Powerball proved to be just one number away from winning the Sept. 9 jackpot, but the Campbell County, Ky., man who purchased it still won $50,000.

Still, the man isn’t complaining, according to the Kentucky Lottery.

“I was one number away from retirement,” he said. “I’m happy with what I got.”

After taxes, the man took home a check worth $36,000. He plans to pay off debts and buy a new car.

A good feeling leads to a jackpot win

The second winner, a Campbell County woman who also wishes to remain anonymous, regularly plays the Kentucky Lottery Precious 7’s Fast Play game.

The Fast Play is actually a series of games with instant cash prizes and a rolling jackpot. The woman won $500 her first time playing the game, so she had a feeling she’d eventually win the jackpot.

On Sept. 20, the woman and her husband stopped at Dayton Market, where she bought a ticket. Looking at the ticket in the parking lot, she couldn’t believe it.

That jackpot win was worth $431,775.

“I looked at it, then looked back and it said jackpot,” she said. “I thought, ‘Oh my god, oh my god.’”

Her family and friends couldn’t believe it either.

“No one believed me,” she told officials. “They all kept saying it was a scam, that it’s a fraud but I knew it was a winner, ‘I’m going to go get my check,’ I told them.”

After taxes, the woman took home $310,878. She said she plans to pay off her bills and support her family.

Other recent Northern Kentucky lottery winners

Other Northern Kentucky residents have recently won big prizes playing the lottery.

That includes a Henry County man who scratched off $225,000 and a Ft. Thomas preschool teacher who won $178,000, both just in the last two months.
