Lexington couple cashes in on a big Powerball win with plans to travel overseas
A Lexington couple is cashing in on a big Powerball win after they purchased a ticket at a Nicholasville Kroger earlier this month.
Cheryl and Bobby Taylor bought the winning ticket at the Kroger on Bellerive Boulevard in time for the game’s Feb. 5 drawing.
The ticket matched four white balls and the red Powerball, winning the game’s third-place prize of $50,000, the Kentucky Lottery said in a news release Tuesday. The winning numbers for the drawing were 19, 27, 30, 50, 62 and Powerball 14.
The couple didn’t discover the win until the Friday following the Wednesday drawing, the release said.
“I guess I was a little nervous. You feel like this is just a gift. It’s random. You know, what did I do to deserve this? But, you know, we’re grateful,” Cheryl Taylor told lottery officials.
The couple reportedly plays regularly, in part because several of her children have received scholarships through the state’s KEES program, which is funded by lottery revenue.
“I play because it’s fun. It’s fantasy. So, you know, from the beginning, to me, this was always a program that supported education,” Cheryl Taylor said. “I figure I put my $2 in and I lose it; you know, I’ve supported somebody else’s child to go to school, just like mine were supported.”
The couple claimed their winnings at Kentucky Lottery headquarters Feb. 10 and accepted a check worth $36,000 after taxes.
“We’re both retired,” Cheryl Taylor said. “We like to travel, and we have to be selective about how much we do and where we go. This takes some pressure off. We planned a trip to Ireland this year. And so, you know, part of that is going to help us with that trip. And maybe some home maintenance things. But I mean, what a great gift. We’re humbled and we are grateful.”
The couple’s Powerball win isn’t the only recent prize won by a Kentuckian lately. A Bowling Green man secured a $50,000 scratch-off ticket prize earlier this month after his wife suggested he try a different game.
